佛像中有一种鎏金工艺,多用于铜造像,俗称“鎏金铜佛像”。这种佛像是供宫廷、寺庙、使用;它的出现始于两汉,盛行于隋唐,延续至明清,常见的有释迦牟尼、观音、文殊、普贤、天王、母度等。鎏金是自先秦时代即产生的传统金属装饰工艺,是一种传统的做法,至今仍在民间流行,亦称火镀金或汞镀金。在东周和汉代以后均颇为流行,是当时最值得称道的铜器表面装饰工艺之一,先后称为黄金涂、金黄涂、金涂、涂金、镀金,宋代始称鎏金。
There is a kind of gilding process in Buddha statues, which is mostly used for bronze statues, commonly known as "gilded bronze Buddha statues". It was one of the most praiseworthy bronze surface decoration techniques at that time. It was successively called gold coating, golden yellow coating, gold coating, gold plating. It was first called gilding in Song Dynasty.
